School exclusion data in Calderdale from May 2019 onwards for all Calderdale schools (including Academies), which include fixed/suspensions and permanent exclusions alongside the main reason for these exclusions. The data source for the exclusion data is the school census.
Notes
Some care is required in analysing this data. The exclusions data is not based on academic years. The DfE (Department for Education) requires each school census submission to collect the two previous terms:
October (Autumn census): covers exclusions from the start of the Spring term to the end of the Summer term in the previous academic year.
January (Spring census): covers exclusions from the start of the Summer term in the previous academic year to the end of the Autumn term in the current academic year.
May (Summer census): covers exclusions from the start of the Autumn term to the end of the Spring term in the current academic year.
For example, the suspensions or permanent exclusions dates used by the DfE for the 2025/26 academic year are:
October 2025 (Autumn census): all suspensions and permanent exclusions with start dates between 1 January 2025 and 31 July 2025.
January 2026 (Spring census): all suspensions and permanent exclusions with start dates between 21 April 2025 (Easter Monday) and 31 December 2025.
May 2026 (Summer census): all suspensions and permanent exclusions with start dates between 1 August 2025 and 5 April 2026 (Easter Sunday).
This ensures permanent exclusions going through the review process at the time of the census are not missed and will be picked up again in the following term if the review result is upheld. This may result in some permanent exclusions being included in two consecutive censuses. However, this will not result in double counting in the national statistics as only the latest information returned for each term is used.
