This dataset provides digital spatial information on the location of metallic mineral occurrences in Wales at a scale of 1:50 000. While the broader term ‘mineral resources’ includes a wide range of geological materials, this dataset focuses solely on metallic minerals, which are defined under international standards to include both geological and potential economic considerations. The dataset is based primarily on mapped geology, with limited assessment of economic viability, and is intended to show the distribution and extent of metallic mineral occurrences rather than potential extraction areas. Users can visualise the locations of metallic mineral occurrences and relate them to other forms of land-use (such as urban areas or environmentally designated areas), infrastructure, and conservation data. This dataset is a subset of the wider Welsh mineral resources dataset and is derived using the same methodology. The British Geological Survey (BGS) developed this dataset under a grant from the Welsh Assembly Government Aggregates Levy Fund in 2009, co-funded through the BGS Sustainable Mineral Solutions project. Data production was completed in 2010, with minor revisions to geometry and attributes in 2020. Point data for metallic mineral occurrences are not included in this revision, as these are superseded by other BGS datasets, such as the BGS BritPits database of mines and quarries. The dataset is suitable for visualising broad patterns in the distribution of metallic minerals across Wales. It does not indicate mineral reserves or designate potential extraction areas. Only onshore mainland occurrences are included, and the data quality varies. Users should consider this dataset as a tool for regional-scale understanding of metallic mineral distribution rather than for site-specific economic assessment.
